I always find half occupying my mind, at times, opens it to drift into other places. Some that I need to go, others not so much. It helps me to concentrate in some strange way. Doodling for example whilst I'm on the phone or at a meeting. It kinda helps me hear better. I have always felt a bit guilty about this, well at meetings it feels a little rebellious. Apparently all I need to do is quote the study published in Applied Cognitive Psychology. They have found proof that this will help me listen to banality better. Clearly I'm not implying that school staff meetings are banal, that's just a ridiculous idea but those other meetings that I attend can get a bit boring. As Jackie Andrade explains.
“If someone is doing a boring task, like listening to a dull telephone conversation, they may start to daydream. Daydreaming distracts them from the task, resulting in poor performance. A simple task, like doodling, may be sufficient to stop daydreaming without affecting performance on the main task” [BBC News], Andrade says.
Better not tell the students, as they may site this as an excuse to draw while I'm teaching incredibly fascinating things. Or talk while I'm teaching drawing, regardless seems like a slippery slope. If you need a little moderate distracting. Try this site www.carnalfury.com sounds a lot dirtier than it is.
